My Coaching Journey - Jenny Moore

I was first introduced to coaching at the HERS Leadership Institute. HERS is a leadership program for Higher Ed Professionals with a focus on women and people who are gender diverse. The leadership institute was my first weeks-long, immersive professional development opportunity in a non-competitive space, where participants encourage each other’s growth. In the mornings, we sat at large round tables drinking coffee and conferencing with one another. In the afternoons, we migrated outside to envision and brainstorm our career paths. Higher ed coaches were onsite to hear us describe our successes, challenges, and vision for institutional change. This was my first exposure to the transformative power of coaching in higher education.

Reflecting on a Culture of Support

One night, sleeping in my dorm room in the cool mountains outside Denver, I wrote in my journal: How did HERS create this culture of support, and how could I bring coaching back to my Hispanic Serving Institution in Texas? While others in my group made commitments to become deans or university presidents, I went in a very different direction. HERS moved me in an unexpected direction.

A Commitment to Coaching as a Discipline

In the summer of 2022, I made a personal and professional commitment to study the art and science of coaching as a discipline for transforming institutional change. For the next two years, I read, practiced, and studied for my International Coaching Federation (ICF) exams. It was rewarding and challenging work and at times. I was humbled by the intricacies and sophistication of serving others well.

I learned the balance point between receding into the background while also being deeply present in a coaching conversation. Coaching is an intellectual, somatic, and emotional muscle that must be practiced and finely tuned. As a former journalist, I gravitated to coaching for its layered, communicative complexity.

Bringing Coaching to Higher Education

After further practice and study, I was convinced that coaching would benefit my own professional development and those of faculty, staff, and administration. Back at my own institution and in meetings with my private clients, I created space for deep listening, letting each individual become part of my collective knowledge for the challenges presented in higher ed.

As part of my own journey, I wish to give thanks to the HERS Institute for providing my unexpected pivot and contributing to my professional development. There are many talented higher ed coaches to choose from and I always encourage clients to find their best fit.
