The Mesquite is a digital media initiative providing the latest campus news and viewpoint to students, faculty, alumni and the surrounding community. When I launched this project in 2011, I wanted to create a low-cost ‘newspaper of record’ for a new university undergoing rapid development. I also wanted to experiment with new directions in journalism education as budget cuts and technological influence were folding print publications across the country. I advised, mentored and coached students on this reporting project for eight years. The daily news site is still running, and now advised by my mentee, Communication lecturer and journalist Teresa Talerico. She does great work.
